Hub-and-Spoke Hiking: Central Comfort with Remote Access

Unlike traditional trekking where you change hotels every night, we use a Hub-and-Spoke model. You enjoy the stability of staying in the same room for the entire week, while we provide the logistics to explore the whole island.

While many beautiful trails start right from our doorstep in Arethousa, we don’t want you to miss Ikaria’s more distant secrets. We provide vehicle transportation to drop you off at remote trailheads across the island and pick you up at the end of your route. This allows you to witness the diversity of Ikarian nature—from the high alpine plateaus to the coastal cliffs—without the logistical headache of public transport or circular routes.

Your Retreat: Accommodation at the Ikarian Center Guesthouse

Your home for the week is the Ikarian Centre guesthouse, located in a stunning mountain setting 1.5 km from the village of Arethousa. Surrounded by wild oak trees and overlooking the sea, the guesthouse is designed for peace and focus.

Each participant is provided with a private room featuring its own en-suite bathroom and a private kitchenette with a fridge. This setup offers you the perfect balance of community and privacy. You have your own space to relax after a long day on the trails, yet you are only steps away from the communal areas where our small community gathers for food, conversation, activities and lessons.

Dining and “Kolatsio”

Food is the cornerstone of our “Bridge Experience.” After all, we believe that the best way to recover from a hike is through shared stories over a meal of homemade Ikarian cuisine. So in the evening, hikers, students and teachers gather around a table and eat together. It is not just a meal, it is a social activity where we enjoy local wine and traditional Ikarian recipes, discussing the discoveries of the day.

The Hiker’s “Snack”: For your time on the trails, we provide the basic ingredients for a snack – “kolatsio” that will keep you full of energy during the hike. You can find fresh bread, cheese, fruits and vegetables in the communal refrigerator to prepare your own “snack” exactly as you like before starting the day.

Beyond the Trail: Connecting with the Ikarian Soul

Walking the trails is only half the story. To truly understand Ikaria, you need to get to know its people. During the week, we act as your bridge to the local community. You will visit local artisans and winemakers in their workshops. In the evenings, we gather for traditional dance lessons to prepare you for the legendary village festivals. These festivals are the heart of the island, and we make sure you join the dance circle not as a tourist, but as a guest who understand the rhythm.

Seasonal Traditions: The Olive Harvest (October – November)

For those visiting in October or November, the program offers a unique connection to the land through the traditional olive harvest. If there is an olive production in the year (which is not always the case especially in recent years due to climate change), we invite our guests to participate in this authentic Mediterranean ritual.

Understanding the Terrain: The Vertical Island

It is important for hikers to understand that Ikaria, though an island, is essentially a high and steep mountain rising out of the Aegean Sea. The terrain is rugged and “vertical.” There are very few flat paths here; almost every route involves significant uphill climbs and steep downhill descents.

The trails follow the old “monopatia” used by locals for centuries, often stone-paved but frequently steep. We rate most of our routes as moderate to challenging due to the elevation changes. However, the reward for every climb is a panoramic view of the sea and a profound sense of isolation that few other Greek islands can offer.
